Medicine Hat Tigers host top team in WHL’s Eastern Conference

Dec 10, 2024 | 5:40 PM

The Medicine Hat Tigers are back at Co-op Place Tuesday night taking on the WHL’s Eastern Conference leading Saskatoon Blades.

A team they have dropped two close decisions to already so far this season.

The Tigers will be without star forward Gavin McKenna, who is away at the Team Canada World Junior Selection camp, also underway Tuesday.

It should be known by early next week if he makes Canada’s main roster.

Tigers play-by-play voice Will Bryant said, there will also be a few Blades away at world junior camps.

“Both clubs are coming in with, you know, less than 100% of their lineup. The Blades, they’re going to be without Tanner Molendyk, also away at World Junior Selection camp for Team Canada,” Bryant said.

“They’re also going to be without forward David Lewandowski as well as he’s with Germany for their preliminary roster right now,” he added.

“For the Tigers, certainly a good opportunity here on home ice to get right against a tough Saskatoon club.”

Bryant says staying out of the penalty box is going to be important for the Tigers.

“Saskatoon, their power play is over 50 per cent against the Tigers,” Bryant said.

“They’ve gone to the power play seven times through two games against the Tigers. They’re four for seven over that stretch,” he added.

“If you can limit their top end scoring, that’s going to be a big key for them tonight.”

Tigers defenseman Bryce Pickford is expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday night, returning from injury.

The Tigers have sent goaltender Cash Christie back to his CSSHL team St. George’s School U18 Prep.

Serving as back up tonight will be a Medicine Hat native in Beck Boiteau, who is listed as an emergency back up for the contest.

Boiteau started the season as a backup goaltender with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips before being sent to the AJHL‘s Whitecourt Wolverines.

He spent last season with the South Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Prep team, and is also an alumni of the South East Athletic Club program where he was a teammate of current Tigers defenseman Josh Van Mulligen.

Goaltender Jordan Switzer is likely to get the start in net, with Harrison Meneghin not expected back until after Christmas according to Bryant.

The Tigers could also potentially have a new defenseman in the lineup tonight.

Tyson Moss, he took warm-ups on Saturday. I haven’t seen if he’ll go tonight but a kid from Vancouver Island out of Port Moody, he’s now officially on this Tigers roster,” Bryant said.

Puck drop at Co-op Place is at 7 p.m.

Will Bryant and Lance Doll will have the radio broadcast on Wild 94.5 starting with the pregame at 6:30 p.m.

Tuesday will also be toonie hot dogs at the concession with a limit of two.

It’s also never waste a ticket night, with season ticket holders able to exchange unused tickets from the season for ticket to this contest.
