Medicine Hat police running holiday check stops

The Medicine Hat Police Service is running several check stops over the holiday season to promote safe, sober driving.

Police said one will be held on Dec. 13 and another on Dec. 21. There will also be unannounced check stops, according to a news release.

There were 330 drivers charged under police’s Immediate Roadside Sanction program in 2023.

Police said 202 drivers have been charged this year as of Dec. 9.

Alberta introduced mandatory alcohol screening with new impaired driving legislation in December 2018.

When entering a check stop, drivers will be required to provide a sample of breath. The testing process is quick to complete, police said.

The roadside screening device provides immediate readings to the operator and drivers that pass the testing will continue on their way without undue inconvenience.

The goal, police said, is to provide minimal disruption to motorists while ensuring the safety of our roadways.

“Every death and injury caused by impaired driving is completely preventable, we all have a responsibility when it comes to preventing impaired driving whether by alcohol or drugs,” police said in a statement.

“If you suspect someone of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, please contact 911.”
