Medicine Hat city council will on Thursday evening hear staff feedback on a third-party review of its energy business that came before council just over a week ago.

That review, carried out by the KPMG consulting firm, recommended the city create an arms-length corporation run by a skills-based board, establish a rate-setting city committee and sell off the natural gas production unit.

Before council moved ahead with any decisions, it asked during its Nov. 25 meeting for high-level city staff to give recommendations based on the report by Monday.

Officials are expected to give a presentation at a special meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Those interested in watching can attend the public meeting in-person at city hall or watch a live stream on the city’s YouTube channel.

All of council but Mayor Linnsie Clark voted in favour of asking for staff feedback by Dec. 9. Clark said the the timeframe was too short.

Coun. Darren Hirsch said he wanted the quick turnaround and debate while it was a hot topic at council.

Chief administrator Ann Mitchell said the relevant managing director, Rochelle Pancoast, had been working with the material throughout the last several months and so would be prepared to present by council’s required date.
