Medicine Hat’s Division Avenue South construction complete for 2024

Division Avenue South has now fully opened to motorists and pedestrians in Medicine Hat as of Thursday afternoon.

From Division Avenue from Third Street Southwest to Seventh Street Southwest, and from the intersection of 11th Street Southwest up to and including Old Cemetary Road hill, the project has reached completion for 2024.

Two sections of the project remain yet for 2025 — Division Avenue from Seventh Street Southwest up to and including the intersection of 10th Street Southwest.

Also included is a portion of the multi-use trail at the bottom of Old Cemetary Road hill.

The project was initially anticipated to reach completion by the end of 2024. However, certain factors have prevented deadlines from being hit.

Division Avenue South contains critical underground infrastructure that needs to be protected and remaining in service for the duration of the project.

Crews worked to prevent disruption of utility service, and used extreme caution when rebuilding the roadway. Weather-related events also contributed to delays to the initial project timeline.

Efforts between multiple City departments to address upgrades to road structure greatly benefitted the Division Avenue South Rehabilitation project.

Also upgraded were underground utilities, active transportation needs, motorist and pedestrian safety, among other factors.
