Veterinary clinic hosting ‘try-it-treadmill’ day for pets on Thursday

The cold weather has arrived and pet owners are sure to be in search of ways to keep their furry friends active.

Not everyone has to subject themselves to the climate, especially if their dogs shouldn’t physically do so.

Cypress View Veterinary Clinic has offered what they refer to as the “try-it-treadmill”, a water-submerged conveyor that dogs — and even willing cats — can use.

The treadmill offers a form of excercise to animals who may be incapable of getting it otherwise due to, for example, joint or other physical health issues.

Registered veterinary technician Tracey Howe demonstrated how the machine worked with one of their frequent visitors — a retired service dog named Mulder.

“He comes in weekly to keep active with the underwater treadmill. So we base off the height of the water and the speed at which he goes just to help keep him fit,” she said.

“The height of the water reduces how much they weigh in it. So it’s easier on their joints, but walking through water is a lot more work for them. So they’re getting a lot more exercise while doing less on their joints.”

Howe continued to feed Mulder healthy treats to keep him motivated and moving on the treadmill.

“We use it for physio cases, too. So dogs that are recovering from knee surgery or other surgeries or even dogs that just have really bad arthritis and aren’t walking so well anymore, we can lift the water quite high so that they weigh very little,” she said.

“It’s a lot less on their joints, and they do really well with it. And then we also use it for a few sport dogs. So we can help train endurance with it, because obviously, the water is a lot more work than running on land. So it helps to really push their levels and limits,” she added.

On Thursday, the clinic will be offering 20-minute time slots on the treadmill for any pet owners who’d like to try. Pets don’t have to engage the full allotted time, but however long based on their comfort level.

The price of the treadmill is pay-what-you-will, with proceeds going towards Tails of Help. The charity ensures pets get veterinary care despite financial hardship.
