A Redcliff aerospace firm will receive $2.6 million from the federal government to develop, demonstrate and commercialize an electric UAV that it has already started building.

It’s the largest portion of a $4.3-million investment into Alberta’s aerospace and aviation industry revealed Monday by Calgary-area MP George Chahal.

The funding for Redcliff’s UVAD Technologies Inc. “is critically important to our efforts in developing and commercializing an industry leading Uncrewed Aircraft Vehicle on a global scale,” CEO David Birkett said in a released statement.

“The Alpine Swift, UVAD’s all-electric UAV, has progressed significantly through the support of this program,” Birkett added.

“Government support has also enabled southern Alberta to attract world leading experts in the UAV field, and UVAD is strategically positioned to build on this expertise.”

UVAD has grown exponentially since establishing its facility in the Medicine Hat area, according to Birkett.

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, the Alberta Aviation and Aerospace Council, Elevate Aviation and Sturgeon County are also receiving grants through the funding.

The cash will be distributed through Prairies Economic Development Canada, known also as PrairiesCan.
