Gordon McClure has been awarded the recommendation to serve as Alberta’s eighth Chief Electoral Officer.

The recommendation comes from the Select Special Ethics Commissioner and Chief Electoral Officer Search Committee, which were both mandated with selecting someone for the role.

“On behalf of the committee I would like to thank all applicants for their participation,” said Shane Getson, MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland and chair of the search committee.

McClure has several decades of public service experience, serving in various positions within the Government of Alberta, including Appeals Coordinator and chair of the Public Lands Appeal board for more than 10 years. He also holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria.

The Chief Electoral Officer is a nonpartisan officer of the Legislature, responsible for a variety of duties under the Election Act, Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act and the Senatorial Selection Act.

The Chief Electoral Officer is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in council following the passage of a motion by the Legislative Assembly. The motion to recommend McClure is expected to be brought before the Assembly in the coming days.
