Helium company launches new project near Medicine Hat

Oct 30, 2024 | 10:35 AM

A U.S.-based company focused on exploring, developing and producing untapped energy assets says it has successfully launched a new helium project near Medicine Hat.

Weil Group Resources revealed this week it has kicked off its new modular helium purification facility, an innovation the group said represents the latest advancement in its Canadian portfolio.

At the heart of the “Pearl” project is Weil’s Helium Integrated Membrane Module, also called the WHIMM system.

It’s configured to produce over 24 MMscf of helium annually, representing the most cost-effective process design for bringing enriched helium to market, the company said.

The WHIMM is a re-deployable and scalable design that that can accommodate both single and multiple well production scenarios.

Chief executive officer Jeff Vogt said in a released statement that the company is “excited to bring another helium facility on-stream in Canada and have learned much to bring new, more efficient process designs to the forefront.”

“Between our technical and operating teams, all stakeholders here, and our customers, we are pleased to offer new, critical resources to market,” he added.

Helium production is a growing industry in southeast Alberta.

A net-zero emissions helium plant was unveiled in Brooks in December 2023 that Premier Danielle Smith said would. along with other facilities like it, play a key role in Alberta’s carbon neutrality target of 2050.

As Medicine Hat faces the challenge of declining oil and gas profits for its self-owned energy business, other energy sources like helium plants and carbon capture technology are among potential options for the city to invest in.
