A 33-year-old Medicine Hat man was arrested Monday after he was tracked down by police with help from the HALO Air Ambulance.

That’s according to details revealed in a news release from the Medicine Hat Police Service on Tuesday.

Several residents posted about seeing a helicopter and large police presence in the city.

Patrol officers responded to a report of a dispute in the area of Thompson Crescent Southeast on Monday afternoon, police said.

Police at the time received information that a suspect had left a residence with a female acquaintance and allegedly possessed a firearm.

The man refused to pull over when police later found his vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Due to public safety concerns, officers did not pursue the vehicle.

The vehicle was later located in a remote area on the west side of the city near the South Saskatchewan River.

The suspect allegedly drove the vehicle off-road, through a field and over an embankment on the south side of the river.

With assistance from the HALO helicopter, officers located and arrested the man.

He was sent to hospital for injuries he sustained in a collision, police said.

The Medicine Hat man received several weapon possession charges. He also received charges for uttering threats, dangerous operation of a vehicle and fleeing police.

The suspect was remanded into custody with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.
