Medicine Hat man faces multiple charges after standoff with police

Medicine Hat Police ended up in a standoff with an 44-year old Medicine Hat man after responding to a report of an injured person mid-day Wednesday near Maple Avenue Southeast.

When police arrived to the 800 block of Third Street Southeast at 11:45 a.m. on Oct. 23, they learned that the individual hurt claimed to have sustained their injuries due to an assault at a home on the same block.

Officers then attended the residence where the alleged assault happened to speak to the occupant of the home, who was later learned to be a suspect in the assault.

The suspect brandished a knife and threatened a police officer with it, before going back into the home.

Additional officers where called to the scene.

Attempts were made by officers to decompress the situation, with a Police and Crisis Team officer able to successfully negotiate the suspect out of the residence.

The Medicine Hat man has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon, and uttering threats.

The victim is known to the suspect, and the suspect is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Nov. 18.
