There are more than a million small and medium-sized businesses across Canada.

Medicine Hat, Redcliff, Brooks and local areas have their fair share of that number.

This is Small Business Week, built to celebrate small businesses and the individuals who run them.

Steven Pudwell, first vice president with the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce said our area is full of entrepreneurs.

“These people are your neighbours, they give a lot to their business, to their community,” Pudwell said.

“If you can spend a few minutes going down, checking out some of the shops throughout Medicine Hat and throughout our region, they have so much to offer, they’re unique, they have great ideas.”

Pudwell adds that the chamber and a number of other groups throughout the area are there to help small businesses with mentorship.

He said an entrepreneurs with lots of drive, and good ideas can make a business successful, but it is one step at a time.

With a lot of small business owners wanting to be their own boss, it’s important to develop a good business plan when offering people a product or service to buy.

Pudwell said acknowledging the accomplishments of these individuals is important.

“It’s about celebrating those companies that maybe start small, grow big one day,” Pudwell said.

“But also they are the backbone of our economy in Alberta, and especially here in Medicine Hat in southern Alberta.”

Pudwell adds that the majority of the workforce in Alberta and in our area is created by small business.

Small Business Week runs Oct. 20-26.
