Trio of Calgary men accused of scamming Medicine Hat senior

Three Calgary men are facing charges after city police completed an investigation into a scam targeting seniors in Medicine Hat.

A local senior got a call last week from a con artist posing as a bank inspector.

The call claimed the person’s identity had been compromised and their account had been used for illegal activity.

The scammer said the senior would need to pay for an investigation through their bank security services, to clear their name, and that the money would be refunded to them at the end of the investigation.

The real police investigators were able to use special techniques to turn the table on the scammer and arrests followed.

Charges of theft, fraud and extortion were laid, with the accused released on bail for a court date in Medicine Hat on Nov. 5.
