Oasiz Wiesblatt named as new Medicine Hat Tigers captain

Oct 9, 2024 | 12:57 PM

The Medicine Hat Tigers have revealed 20-year-old forward Oasiz Wiesblatt as its captain for the 2024-25 season.

Last season’s captain Tyler MacKenzie was traded to the Everett Silvertips during the off-season.

The Tigers had gone with only assistant captains through the first five games of the season.

This is the sixth season over-ager Wiesblatt has played with the Tigers, as he played a single game with the team during the 2019-20 season.

The Calgary native has played a total of 222 regular season games heading into Wednesday’s contest with the Red Deer Rebels.

Over that period, Wiesblatt has scored 66 goals and put up 187 points to go with 324 penalty minutes, as he plays his final season eligible in the league.

Wiesblatt has also put up two goals and five points in nine post-season games over his WHL career.

Wiesblatt said he had no an idea about who might become the captain during a CHAT News interview two weeks prior.

“No idea. I mean, there’s a bunch of leaders in here, so it could go to anyone,” Wiesblatt said.

“We got a good culture here and we got a bunch of leaders on and off the ice, but I think I would say everyone here is a leader.”
