A former resident of Redcliff and his wife have made a donation to kick off a legacy fund on Thursday that will supply grants from dividends made from the account’s interest to benefit the town.

Programs that support youth, seniors , the severely disadvantaged, art and culture, education and other initiatives are all eligible for the grants.

The Redcliff Legacy Endowment Fund, started off through an undisclosed donation from Vern and Joan Simaluk, will be operated by the Community Foundation of Southeast Alberta.

It will function as an open endowment fund that anyone from Redcliff can donate to. Any donations over $25 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.

Once the fund reaches $200,000 in value, Redcliff Mayor Dwight Kilpatrick said thousands of dollars will be available for a few grants per year.

“When it comes to maturity I would think there’s probably about [$12,000] to $13,000 a year that could be given out in Redcliff,” Kilpatrick said.

Officials were unable to give a timeline as to when the grants will be available.
