Charity volunteer now needs help from the Medicine Hat community she’s supported for so long

An organization is asking for the community’s support in giving back to someone who has given so much to those who need it most in Medicine Hat.

Patty Musgrave has been a key figure of the Medicine Hat Cares Society for about seven years and has been involved with putting hampers together for over a decade.

Musgrave’s common-law husband Richard Baker, for whom she was caregiver for the last seven years of their 15 years together, recently passed away.

Baker’s life support was removed on Aug. 18 and he died shortly after.

Patty herself is on medical leave from work until November and neither she nor Richard had life insurance.

But now Musgrave needs help from a community she’s poured so much into, according to Maureen Getz, a board member of the society.

She’s a very down-to-earth person that wouldn’t have asked for help herself but is always about helping others.

“She remembers things about people’s families,” Getz told CHAT News in a recent interview.

“It’s like having your grandma come and help you out, whatever you need done.”

Getz recalled a bottle drive some six years ago featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse when Musgrave’s joy shone through.

“We had a lot of fun waving people down, you got to see a fun side of her,” Getz said.

“There’s so much more serious things going on, but you really got to see she likes to have fun and do good in the community.”

Those interested in supporting can donate through the GoFundMe fundraiser online or by contacting Getz directly at 403-878-4450.
