Medicine Hat Cubs kick off home schedule Friday

The Medicine Hat Cubs take to the ice for their home opener Friday.

The Junior B squad is undefeated so far this season, after winning a pair of road games last weekend in Okotoks and Coaldale.

Cubs head coach and general manager Randy Wong said those road games were a good way to start the year.

“The guys get to bond and we get a chance to see what a couple teams are like on the road. We don’t have the pressures at home and the distractions that we may have, so always good to start on the road,” Wong said.

“We got the two wins and so we’re excited. The team is looking good. We got a good mix of young guys and some old guys still with the program and so we’ve combined them all and I think we’re showing that we’ve got another competitive season ahead of us.”

The Cubs are still getting used to the different lineups they see each night in the Heritage Junior Hockey League, with roster turnover common each year.

Wong does still expect the competition to be strong and feels that a shortened training camp, and having a roster in place for practice early in the pre-season to work on systems has helped them so far.

He also feels they have the kind of team that could challenge for a league title.

“This is one of those other opportunities that we have. I think we’ve built this team this year a little different. We think we’ve got a lot of depth on our team, I think we’re really fast and I think we’re going to score a lot of goals this year,” Wong said.

“You kind of got to work with what you got and I think that’s what we feel that we have this year, so we’re going to lay that on the table and we’ll see what shakes out at the end of the year.”

Wong is hoping for lots of fan support from the local hockey community, as they built their schedule to avoid playing the same nights as Tigers home games.

The Cubs home opener Friday night at the Kinplex against the High River Flyers was set to begin at 7:30 p.m., a bus delay will have the game starting at 8:30 p.m.

They are back in action at the Kinplex Sunday hosting the Three Hills Thrashers at 3 p.m.
