Liberal minister calls out Poilievre over Alberta oil and gas fundraiser, Tories push for non-confidence

Sep 24, 2024 | 9:43 AM

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is calling out Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for holding a fundraising last year in Banff, Alta., with oil and gas sector executives.

An Elections Canada filing shared by the Liberals shows that a number of executives, including the head of a major oil and gas company, attended a Conservative fundraiser advertised as “An Evening with Pierre Poilievre” on April 11, 2023.

Records show Cenovus CEO Alexander Pourbaix donated $1,600 to Conservative Party of Canada the next day.

Guilbeault says Poilievre’s pledge to do away with carbon pricing is about helping his “rich friends.”

Poilievre has promised to “axe” the consumer carbon price, which was brought in by the Liberals to encourage consumers and small businesses to reduce carbon-emitting consumption.

The Conservative leader has not made his position clear on the industrial carbon pricing system, which makes big polluters pay on a portion of their emissions.

Poilievre pushes for non-confidence

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre delivered a campaign-style speech in the House of Commons as he asked other members of Parliament to support a motion that could trigger an early election.

Poilievre outlined his plans to increase revenue and reduce interest rates and debt, cut development taxes and restore what he calls “the promise of Canada.”

The non-confidence motion Poilievre has put forward is the first test for the minority government since the NDP ended its supply-and-confidence deal with the Liberals earlier this month.

The Bloc Québécois and NDP have already said they will not support the motion, which will be voted on Wednesday.

That all but eliminates the possibility of a snap election this week.

The Conservatives have another chance to introduce a non-confidence motion on Thursday.
