Arrest made after handgun allegedly pointed at youths, Medicine Hat police say

Police have arrested a Medicine Hat man who allegedly pointed a BB-style handgun at a group of youths.

A verbal altercation occurred between the 43-year-old man and the group outside the Medicine Hat Mall.

He pulled out a firearm before fleeing the scene, the Medicine Hat Police Service said Friday.

Thanks to witness statements and video surveillance of the area officers were able to quickly identify the suspect, police said in a statement.

The MHPS Criminal Investigation Section located and arrested the male without incident on Wednesday.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of the BB-style handgun believed to have been used during the incident.

The suspect was charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and failing to comply with a release order.

He was released on a release order after a judicial hearing.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 3 at provincial court in Medicine Hat.
