Medicine Hat library expanding presence to Big Marble Go Centre

Medicine Hat’s library is expanding its presence to the Big Marble Go Centre.

It’s part of an ongoing effort by the Medicine Hat Public Library to meet residents and visitors where they’re at, chief librarian Ken Feser said Tuesday.

“We know that our downtown location doesn’t work for everyone and we want to offer more convenient ways to access our collections and services,” Feser said.

“This is a great opportunity for us to experiment and find ways to deliver library services in ways that fit community needs and that are sustainable within our existing budget,” he added.

“We are starting small and we will adjust the service over time as we learn what people want.”

The permanent satellite outlet will open next month in the lobby of the Big Marble Go recreation centre.

It will feature fiction and non-fiction books from the library’s adult, young adult and children’s collections.

Patrons can “borrow” from the “read at home” collection on an honour -system, grab-and-go basis.

There will be no checkouts — so users don’t need to have a library card — and there will be no due dates or overdue fines, according to a news release from the library.

The library only asks that borrowers to bring back the books when they are done with them.

Staff will begin to place and stock shelving in late September, with a grand opening celebration taking place in October.

A library spokesperson said a date for the opening will be announced in the coming weeks.
