Gear Up! Medicine Hat Lions taking donations and offering free hockey and ringette equipment

The Medicine Hat Lions Club is gearing up for their 11th year of the Gear Up Goodwill equipment program.

The program helps get equipment in the hands of hockey and ringette players in need.

It’s runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when they are taking donations of gently used or outgrown equipment at the meeting room doors of the Hockey Hounds Arena in Medicine Hat.

Lions club member James Higgins said with the expense of kids playing sports, especially with kids growing out of equipment each year, they want to help make it possible for kids to play longer, and be able to gain access to sport.

Adding that past years the program was limited to ages 16 and under, but this year they have opened it up to all ages.

“But last year, the Medicine Hat Tigers came on board. Thank you very much, guys,” Higgins said.

“They donated just a bunch of hockey pants but they’re quite large because they’re junior players, so we’ve decided to open it up to everyone,” he added.

“Doesn’t matter if you play shinny, if you play street hockey, if you play in the beer league, it doesn’t matter if you need any equipment. Come on out, we’ll help you out.”

Those in need of free equipment can pick up at the Hockey Hounds Arena on Sunday, Aug. 25, also from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

A door prize will also be run, sponsored by Dayz Off Pub, where the lucky winner will be able to have costs covered for additional equipment they might need to play from a local sporting store.

Minor Hockey representatives will be onsite.
