Air quality advisory issued for Medicine Hat and area as wildfire smoke blankets Alberta

It’s hazy outside.

An air quality advisory has been issued by Environment Canada for Medicine Hat and area as wildfire smoke blankets most of Alberta, Saskatchewan and large areas of Manitoba.

During periods of heavy smoke, everyone is at risk, regardless of their age or health, according to the advisory.

The fine particles in wildfire smoke are of particular concern, it added.

Smoke is causing or is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility, according to the federal weather agency’s alert.

This can change periodically from hour-to-hour, depending on the conditions.

Other areas west of Medicine Hat, including Lethbridge, are under a special air quality statement. It is similar to the air quality advisory but is less severe.

Environment Canada says to listen to your body for symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, as well as chest pains or severe cough.

Residents are asked to limit their time outdoors, and when inside, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

Environment Canada also advises ensuring your home’s ventilation system has a clean, good quality air filter or a certified portable air purifier.
