Day 1 of the Alberta Open Championship is in the books at Desert Blume Golf Club.

Sitting at the top of the leaderboard in a three-way tie is local amateur golfer Ryan Werre.

He’s accompanied by professionals Wes Heffernan and Mitchell Fox, who also shot a 5-under par 67.

Fourth place is occupied by local pro Dillon Batsel and local amateur Jordan Forsythe, along with pro Micheal Harrison, all scoring a 4-under par 68.

The next closest local golfer is Ryan Hodgins sitting in a three way tie for 14th spot at a 1-under par 71.

Sixteen of the 99 golfers competing shot below par on the first day.

A larger turn out was expected for the tournament initially, with a few golfers pulling out of the competition.

Day 2 of the event on Wednesday will determine which 60 golfers will move onto the final day on Thursday.
