Medicine Hat Major Mavs lose national Little League final after long run

Aug 8, 2024 | 11:10 AM

The Medicine Hat AAA 12U Major Mavs fell short of making history Thursday after a devastating loss in the Canadian Little League championship against British Columbia.

The Whalley Little League, playing as B.C., beat the Mavs, playing as team Alberta, 10-1 in Kingston, Ont.

The B.C. team will go on to represent Canada at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn.

The final was the only game the Major Mavs lost all tournament, a disheartening conclusion for a previously-unstoppable junior team.

The junior Mavs beat the B.C. team 2-0 in the Medicine Hat squad’s tournament opener.

The Medicine Hat players booked their ticket to the final with a 6-0 win over the host Kingston Colts Little League in a semi-final match up on Wednesday.

If they had won the final on Thursday, the Mavs would have been the first local team to win the national championship.

The team from Whalley, by claiming a seventh Canadian title, also continued B.C. Little League baseball dominance.

A B.C. team has claimed the national throne 15 times in the last 17 years.
