Medicine Hat Major Mavs two wins away from trip to Little League World Series

Aug 6, 2024 | 6:10 PM

The Medicine Hat Major AAA 12U Mavs are undefeated at the conclusion of round robin play, representing Little League Alberta at the 2024 Canadian Little League Championships.

Their perfect 6-0 record included a 7-0 win over Little League Ontario Tuesday morning.

The Mavs will take on the host Kingston Colts Little League team Wednesday morning in a semi-final match up.

Head Coach Steven Russell said they didn’t head there with any expectation of wins or losses.

“Our ultimate goal was to make it into the semi-finals one way or another, whatever that record was going to be. The fact we are 6-0 was kind of, I guess, just a little icing on top of the cake,” Russell said.

“But there is still work to be done.”

Russell asked his players what they thought, with a resounding yeah from the group.

The players said they feel they have improved throughout they year and are continuing to get better throughout the tournament.

They are also very excited at the prospect of playing at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn., with two more wins to secure their spot representing Canada on the international stage.

Russell knows the competition is going to be strong in the playoffs.

“We’ve got to play a team that we’ve played already, that I know they have better arms than what they showed us in our last game,” Russell said.

“We’ve got to prepare for what will be their best for sure and they were able to take out three of the teams that are here. We’ve got to be prepared for that while at the same time, just stay together as a group,” he added.

“Keep playing defensive baseball like we have been, which has been amazing and timely. Just keep the train rolling, keep doing what we’ve been doing.”

Little League Alberta plays a game of X’s and O’s with Little League Ontario during their rain delay on Monday. Facebook – 2024 Canadians Little League Championship

During rain delay on Monday against Little League Ontario a game of X’s and O’s was played, by throwing a baseball back and forth and writing on it.

Little League Alberta ended up tying both rounds of that contest, non-baseball as both teams were smart enough to figure out how to end the game in tie

The players have been happy to be able to explore a new town and new province that a lot of them haven’t had the chance to visit yet and the experience of going there to play baseball.

Anytime the Little League World Series was brought up during their interview with CHAT News, the team made sure to knock on wood by hitting the table, being superstitious, and knowing they are still two wins away from the biggest stage a little league baseball player can play.
