A new medical clinic has opened up in Medicine Hat with a focus on walk-in patients.

Primecure Medical Clinic, located on Maple Avenue Southeast, will have an official grand opening on Thursday after opening its doors Monday.

Dr. Andre Claassan will run his practice out of the office and will have his wife Liza Claassan working as the clinic manager.

The clinic was something they were able to get put together over the last four weeks, even completing some of the construction with help from family and friends.

Liza said the couple previously worked together at their own clinic in South Africa.

“Gosh, it’s 20 years later, we are 20 years older, and it was more challenging. Did not expect we’re going to be in this situation, starting up from new again. But we have, we are, and we’re going to make this work,” Liza said.

“Yes, we will make it work, and we’re looking forward to be of service to the community of Medicine Hat,” Dr. Claassan said.

Dr. Claassan adds that with the doctor shortage in Medicine Hat, they felt the opportunity to move to the new office would allow them a better chance to service the community.

He won’t be taking on new clients at this time and walk-ins won’t be his focus.

However, the clinic will have a number of walk-in hours available, thank to Dr. Gert Grobler, joining from HealthWorx in Medicine Hat.

Grobler said he believes there is somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 patients in Medicine Hat without a family doctor.

He has also noticed patients that have come to see him at walk-in have had up to a three month wait time to see their own family doctor.

“We can basically service those patients, help them with their prescriptions until they see their doctors again or their family doctors again,” Grobler said.

“I think you need a service like that in town. For the last year or so, there’s been issues with availability of doctor services, and then we can give that service.”

The clinic will be open Monday through Friday from from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the expectation for those hours to expand in the future.

The grand opening of Primecure Medical is Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. at 402 Maple Ave. SE.
