‘We’re really excited’: Bunny rescuers in Medicine Hat receive federal approval do become a registered charity

Bunny Run Rabbit Rescue, a Medicine Hat based organization known for re-homing domesticated bunnies in and around the city, is celebrating their new status as a registered charity.

President Amanda Hennessey said that the new registration helps lend credibility to what they are trying to accomplish.

“We’re really excited. We’ve had amazing support from the community without our registration as well,” Hennessey said.

“We’re hoping that this opens up even more doors for us and helps people feel a little more comfortable in our credibility and therefore more inclined to donate, but also opens more doors for other fundraising opportunities.”

Hennessey said that some might find it difficult to pinpoint a wild rabbit and a domesticated bunny.

According to Hennessey, wild rabbits tend to have browner colours, similar to that of a coyote or a deer while domesticated bunnies come in different colours but are noticeably smaller.

Hennessey said that she hopes the new designation will help them accomplish their next goal.

“We’ve been kind of working on is trying to get a trap, neuter and release program going, just because there are so many bunnies in the area, and they just keep repopulating,” Hennesey said.

“That program would help us kind of get ahead of that, but again we would need the means to do that, so hopefully this will help with that as well.”
