Cypress County administrator Tarolyn Aaserud will start as the City of Medicine Hat’s next city clerk after the Labour Day long weekend in September, she told CHAT News on Monday.

“I look forward to my new path and journey ahead,” said Aaserud, who has worked at the county for over six years and in municipal government for 25 years.

A county spokesperson confirmed she was leaving the chief administrative officer role — equivalent to that of Medicine Hat’s city manager — on Saturday.

Larry Randle, who is still officially listed as Medicine Hat’s city clerk, has left the role, according to a source speaking to CHAT News last week on the condition of anonymity.

Aaserud’s statement Monday marks the first public confirmation that Randle is out of the role.

The city has maintained it will have more details on Randle’s status “in the near future”.

“I love municipal government and I’ve been doing it for 25 years,” Aaserud said when asked for comment about the tensions at city hall.

“I look forward to working with council, the team and ratepayers.”

Aaseruds appointment as the next city clerk is expected to be revealed at a Medicine Hat council meeting Monday evening.
