Alberta RCMP gives anti-theft ‘9 p.m. routine’ reminder

Jul 4, 2024 | 11:43 AM

The Alberta RCMP is reminding residents of the anti-theft “9 p.m. routine” it says will act as a deterrence during what is typically a season of increased property crime.

“Alberta summers mean late night with th sun shining bright, however, it’s still important to remember a nightly routine,” the RCMP said in a statement Thursday.

There were 2,789 reports of theft under $5,000 in July 2023, according to police.

The RCMP says following a nightly checklist can help deter “crimes of opportunity”.

Police say the “9 p.m. routine checklist” should include:

  • locking your doors at night, even if you live in a small town;
  • locking your garage or shed;
  • ensuring all yard tools and recreational equipment is safely stored, preferably in a locked garage or shed;
  • removing all keys from vehicles and locking the doors; securely store any off-highway vehicles;
  • consider installing a home alarm; if you already have one, set your alarm before going to sleep;
  • use motion sensor lights on the exterior of your property.

The RCMP says those with a seasonal property or trailer can follow a checklist, too.

That includes:

  • using motion sensor lights on your property, especially at the entryways or near your shed or garage;
  • using a hitch lock and ensure it is properly secured;
  • removing the battery from your trailer when you leave for an extended period;
  • ensuring all tools and recreational items are securely stored once you are done with them;
  • ensuring your vehicle is locked and the keys and garage door opener are removed.
  • ensuring your garage or shed is locked each night.
