A caution for motorists in west Edmonton, as Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating 12 instances of objects being thrown onto Whitemud Drive from overpasses.

EPS says between March 27 and June 22, incidents have involved rocks or heavy pieces of debris allegedly thrown from pedestrian bridges thrown onto Whitemud Drive between 149 Street and 184 Street.

These incidents have caused significant damage to vehicles and put occupants of them at risk for serious injury, EPS says.

“In 2002, a 75-year-old man was killed in an incident like this, and two teenagers were charged with manslaughter,” says Cst. Tylar Heigh, with EPS West Branch. “Throwing objects at moving vehicles can have severe consequences, including the death of civilians and serious criminal charges for the accused.”

At this time, it is not known if the incidents are linked to several similar events that occurred in south Edmonton, mostly near 53 Avenue and Whitemud Drive, in late 2023 and early 2024.

Anyone who has information about these incidents is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
