Series of mail thefts in Medicine Hat likely linked, police say

A suspect arrested in April and two more arrested this week for mail theft are likely related and there could be more people involved, a police official confirmed to CHAT News on Friday.

A 41-year-old Medicine Hat woman was charged in April after a series of community mailboxes were broken into earlier this year.

A pair of Medicine Hat men were arrested on June 11 after police found them in a vehicle with tools for a break-in and stolen mail.

The Medicine Hat Police Service is working closely with Canada Post in an ongoing investigation, Staff Sgt. Jason Graham said.

“We’re still waiting on some further information from [Canada Post], but we believe it’s all connected,” Graham told CHAT News.

“Additional information will follow in the coming weeks.”

The sergeant said he expects there will be more arrests.

“It doesn’t just end at one, two or three. There’s a lot of people involved and we’ll look into those as well as they come in,” Graham said.

He explained that investigating does take some time as the police have to work with Canada Post inspectors as police gather more information.

It could be a few weeks from now when the investigation is wrapped up.

“We’re hopeful that within the next month or so we’ll have some more clarity,” Graham said.

If residents notice their mail boxes have been damaged or anything is out of the ordinary, Graham asked that they notify Canada Post and the police.
