Organizers are hitting the pavement early to start securing runners as registration is now open for the 44th Annual Terry Fox Run.

The three kilometre journey will be on the Sunrise Rotary Trail around the Medicine Hat College.

Themed “No Matter What” to honour Fox’s tenacity during the Marathon of Hope, the Medicine Hat chapter of the cancer-research run aims to raise $10,000 after last years goal of $7,000 was crushed, having raised over $21,000.

Organizer Keith Walker said that the community for the Marathon of Hope has gone beyond just Canadian borders as over 33 countries have participated.

“He’s such an icon. A few years ago, maybe 10 or 15 years ago, they had a vote, and he came in second, a really close second, as the number one hero for Canadians. I think for most people, he is the Canadian hero and what I really like about it is it also takes place in other places around the world,” Walker said.

“33 other countries have Terry Fox Runs. One of the guys that’s on our committee was in Thailand one year and there was a Terry Fox Run there and he said he never felt more patriotic, more Canadian.”

The Canada-wide run is scheduled for September 15th, but Walker is hoping the community and businesses will start registering now.

“Well, we want to get people excited about it, start getting teams together. It’s really fun to have a team. You can be a little bit competitive with other people, or you can have a good time with people in your family or your workmates,” Walker said.

“We want people to start registering. We want businesses to start registering.”
