Y Treasure Thrift Store opening Saturday, continues ‘Post’ legacy

The Y Treasure Thrift Store, located at the old Post location and offering a similar low-cost thrifting experience, is slated to open their doors this Saturday.

Since the Post closed late last year after financial turmoil, Hatters have been trying to find other ways to stretch their wallets.

Medicine Hat YMCA CEO Sharon Hayward said another thrifting location in the city has been sorely missed.

Hayward said that construction may pose a small hurdle, but expects opening day to be a major success.

“We’re the first YMCA in Canada to do it, so we’re pretty excited about that and then it also has all of those other effects that follow,” Hayward said.

It’s sustainable, it helps the environment because we’re reselling merchandise, it employs people, it’s going to support our youth programs and our employment programs once we get up and running,” she added.

“There’s lots of opportunities for that and it makes sure that people have a place to go and find quality, affordable merchandise because right now things are expensive. So it’s definitely, I think, going to make a big difference in the community.”

Hayward said that the Y Treasure Thrift Store was accepting public donations only recently, but that going forward, the community can bring items worth reselling to the back doors.

To honour the Post, they will have a reading area dedicated to the long-time thrift store.

The grand opening is scheduled for 10 a.m. There will be keynote speakers, a giant bag sale and for one lucky thrifter who finds the gem, half off their first purchase.
