Medicine Hat Coun. Robert Dumanowski has been nominated by his peers for a provincial award presented to elected officials who have served on a municipal council for at least two decades.

Coun. Alison Van Dyke made a notice of motion during Monday’s city council meeting to propose Dumanowski, who has served on council since 2001, be nominated for the Alberta Municipalities Distinguished Service Award.

“He has been a steadfast presence at the horseshoe who approaches issues with an open mind and a desire to continue to make a positive impact,” Van Dyke said.

Dumanowski is a principal at the Catholic school where Van Dyke’s children attended and she first met him at the school council table, she said.

“Both experiences have shown me that he is a man of integrity and principle who cares deeply for the people in our community.”

Council voted unanimously to nominate Dumanowski, who was outside the council chambers due to having a conflict-of-interest.

Award winners will be announced by Alberta Municipalities later this year.
