Medicine Hat students honoured by police service

One student from every Grade 6 class in Medicine Hat was honoured and celebrated as 22 students won scholarships from the prestigious Chief Earl Leadership Legacy Fund.

Teachers nominate students based on who best exemplifies the qualities of the Medicine Hat Police Force: integrity, respect, courage and accountability.

Sergeant Adam Gregory organizes the festivities and said that the nominees prove that the community and the future is in great hands.

“I think that as a community, it shows that this isn’t the police going out to make these kids do well. This is our school districts and our families or parents and guardians, people that our kids live with,” Gregory said.

“This is Medicine Hat that’s shaping them. These kids aren’t going out to hit the criteria to get nominated for this, these are just good kids doing the right thing and doing well in school and doing well in life,” he said.

“So I think the community in general when we see these kids get recognized for this should be like “wow, there’s lots of good upcoming people in our own little Medicine Hat, and we’re well on our way’.”

Medicine Hat Police Chief Al Murphy says that the community support is immense

“I think the impact in the community is just some positivity that we all need here and there because the community is doing great things. If you listen to the negativity, which is easy to do these days, it can drive people crazy,” Murphy said.

“This celebrates what’s right in town, which is many things that are right in our community. This celebrates that, so the impact is huge. We love to have the community here with us because they’re so supportive and we get to give back a little bit, so that’s awesome,” he said.

The foundation has already honoured 253 students since being established in 2008.

The award comes with a certificate from the Medicine Hat Police, a small cash prize and a gift card.
