A 32-year-old Medicine Hat man has been charged after allegedly brandishing a weapon at a downtown business.

The Medicine Hat Police Service on May 26 responded to a firearms complaint reported at a business in the 100 block of First Street Southeast.

An employee had asked a man to leave the business as he had previously been banned from entry by staff, police said in a Wednesday news release.

The man left but later returned to the store and pointed a handgun at the staff member, according to the release.

Police patrol members quickly responded and set up containment around the area, which led to the arrest of the male.

The suspect was charged with assault with a weapon, threats to cause death or bodily harm, mischief causing damage under $5,000, disobeying a firearms prohibition order, use of an imitation firearm and possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes.

The man was held for a bail hearing and is being held in custody pending a court appearance scheduled for June 4 in Medicine Hat provincial court.
