Medicine Hat YMCA requests support camp for kids with trauma

May 14, 2024 | 10:49 AM

The YMCA of Medicine Hat on Tuesday requested the community’s urgent financial support for a summer day camp for children who have experienced trauma that is now in danger of closing.

Camp Jude, launched in 2022, is designed to support the needs of children ages five to 12 who have experienced trauma and, as a result exhibit, behaviours that prevent them from participating in traditional day camps.

The camp has, to date, been funded by an anonymous donor with their contributions matched by a one-time Y Canada Innovation Grant.

While the YMCA has worked to secure additional funding, Camp Jude at this point is only partially funded for 2024.

The camp is at risk of being unable to run this summer unless it receives support from the community.

For many of the campers, it’s a crucial opportunity to connect socially with others, according to CEO Sharon Hayward.

“This camp has had a life-changing impact on 220 children in our community and is the first place many of them have been able to make friends and successfully participate in summer programming,” Hayward said.

“Camp Jude is a unique service and the YMCA is committed to doing everything it can to raise the funds needed to see it operate this summer.”
