May 13, 2024 | 9:44 AM

The RCMP is reporting a decrease in crime in rural areas in the region.

In the first three months of this year, there were 76 fewer persons crime offences, 213 fewer property crimes, and 373 fewer total crimes compared to the same period in 2023, the RCMP says.

Break and enters decreased 18.4 per cent, theft of motor vehicles decreased 21.9 per cent and theft under $5,000 decreased 17.7 per cent.

District Advisory Staff Sgt. Laura Akitt says she is excited to share the good news with the public.

“These statistics show the great work our members are doing in our detachments to combat rural crime,”  Akitt said in a statement Monday.

“We will continue to listen to the needs of the people we serve, working proactively towards the apprehension of those who commit crimes in our communities.”
