The Medicine Hat Police Service is accepting applications for their Citizens Police Academy.

This is the fifth time the program has been offered and the first time since 2019.

It offers citizens a better understanding of current policing issues and community safety concerns through lectures, hands on learning and demonstrations.

Those 18 years or older can apply, with 20 applications being accepted.

They are looking for a diversified class with a variety of age, gender, ethnicity, and religious backgrounds.

The program runs for ten weeks from Sept. 11 to Nov. 13 on Wednesday evenings for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Medicine Hat Police Station board room.

Those who complete the program will be part of an official graduation ceremony with a certificate.

Program facilitator Sergeant Carissa Witkowski said they are excited to showcase what they do for the community.

“This is more for our community to have the ability to see the daily operations of our police force,” Witkowski told CHAT News.

Participants will also learn “how we solve crimes within the community and some of our current problem solving initiatives for crimes going on within the community within a day to day basis,” she added.

“I think it will provide some good exposure to some of our firearms tactics, our control tactics, like our fighting and defense tactics as well as different units such as Ident and K-9, our tactical teams, our explosive unit.”

Witkowski said it will help with community engagement and help give the service some ideas and suggestions.

The program is not intended to train people to be police officers and will not be considered as part of the Medicine Hat Police Services recruiting and selection process.

Applications are available online through the Medicine Hat Police Service’s website.
