Southern Alberta community blasted with 46 cm of snow, Medicine Hat spared

Part of the region received some 1.5 feet of snowfall on Tuesday and a snowfall warning remains in effect.

Environment Canada says heavy snow fell over sections of southwestern Alberta from Monday evening to Tuesday morning.

The area southwest of Millarville, located in Foothills County south of Calgary, saw a total of 46 centimetres of snow.

The weather agency also noted the snowfall amounts in three other nearby communities.

The village of Longview got 23 centimetres, the hamlet of Benchlands received 20 centimetres, and Calgarians had to deal with anywhere between five-to-16 centimetres.

The snowfall warning, first issued for southwestern Alberta on Monday, remains in effect.

Some of the impacted communities include Cardston, Fort Macleod, Magrath, Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek, Waterton Lakes National Park, Claresholm, Okotoks, Calgary, and Canmore.

By Thursday evening, an additional 10 to 20 cm of snow could fall.

“This long duration snowfall event could produce total snowfall amounts as high as 30 to 50 cm along the foothills,” reads the snowfall warning from Environment Canada.
