The City of Medicine Hat will mark the National Day of Mourning at a public memorial service this week.

At the service, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Memorial Arboretum.

City Manager Ann Mitchell said the service will offer an opportunity to remember workers whose lives were lost in the workplace and acknowledge those who were disabled, injured or afflicted with industrial disease.

“We come together to honor and reflect on the lives lost, injuries sustained, and illnesses contracted due to work-related incidents,” Mitchell said in a statement.

“The National Day of Mourning serves as a poignant reminder for us all to reaffirm our dedication to enhancing health and safety in our workplaces and prevent further tragedies.”

In 2023, Alberta mourned the loss of 165 individuals to work-related injuries or illnesses.

“Let us stand united in remembrance and commitment to fostering safer work environments for all,” Mitchell added.
