A new pottery studio is coming to Medicine Hat as Canada’s leading clay manufacturer and distributor expands to a new building this spring.

Plainsman Clays Ltd. bought the 25,000 square-foot facility formerly occupied by New Rock Developments and will occupy the space in the coming weeks.

Along with the new studio for potters, the expansion will feature new offices, a retail area and a second manufacturing line producing an additional 50,000 boxes of clay annually.

It’s a big expansion for the Medicine Hat-based company, its leadership said in a statement Thursday.

“We’ve sold 100 per cent of our manufacturing since 2015, and with this expansion, we will increase our capacity by 50 per cent,” Plainsman Clays president and general manager Stephen Dow said.

“This expansion is not just a milestone for Plainsman but also a commitment to our customers and the broader ceramics community, ensuring the continued availability of our premium clay products.”

Plainsman Clays, founded in 1962, has grown to become Canada’s largest clay manufacturer and distributor, with its head office located in Medicine Hat.

It also has retail locations Calgary, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Oakville, Laval and one international storefront in Helena.
