Breaking and entering crimes at homes and businesses often become increasingly common with warmer weather.

Sgt. Adam Gregory, supervisor of the Medicine Hat Police Service’s community support unit, offered seven tips to help avoid being the victim of a theft:

  • Remembering to keep doors and windows locked, even while at home, but especially while away.
  • Getting to know your neighbours and building a relationship with them will increase everyone looking out for each other. It will also allow them to recognize what’s normal and not at your home.
  • If within budget, security measure like doorbell cameras, security systems or signage are helpful as a deterrents.
  • Good sight lines going into your home. Those trees that are really growing low, cut them up six feet or higher. Bushes that are growing higher than two feet, trimming them down a bit to allow good vision by everyone, all your neighbours and people walking by to see.
  • The more lighting the better. Keep entries lit up and the areas around our house lit up, that allows the people going by our houses to be able to see and helps protect.
  • Keep valuables away from entry points to the home.
  • Don’t leave wallets or money sitting on ledges near front doors or in visible ares from outside.
