Medicine Hat mail box break-ins still on the rise, residents feeling unsafe

Apr 8, 2024 | 5:28 PM

Mailboxes continue to be broken into, mail and packages stolen and now, Medicine Hat residents are starting to feel unsafe.

Jennifer Starh said that she sent a letter to herself to see what would happen.

Two weeks later, she has yet to receive it.

Starh said that the damage on her mailbox has not been repaired.

“I put my key in, opened it, it felt kind of loose and there was nothing,” she said.

“I closed it and went to pull me key out and the whole bank just came out on top of me and I had to push it back.”

“Then a few days later, my husband drives by on the way to work and the whole bank was wide open with nothing in it.”

The next time Starh visited, there was a notice saying that the boxes had been compromised.

Steven Leibel from Redcliff said that he’s had issues with Canada Post as well.

Leibel moved from Medicine Hat earlier this year.

When he went to check his mail for a new drivers license, he was accidentally given the neighbours key, meaning he had access to someone else’s mail for over two weeks.

“We were able to access someone else’s mail,” Leibel said.

“They told us to give back the key that we had,” he added.

“But if I was a different person, I could’ve made copies of that key and then I would have permanent access to that person’s mailbox.”

“I have no idea if they contacted that person and let them know that someone else had access to their mail at one point and if there’s any mail missing. It’s kind of scary. I hope no one has a key to my mailbox or something like that.”

Canada Post was not available for comment.

After having her tax slips stolen and the only response being a notice, Starh said she’s lost all faith in Canada Post.

“Who knows what else we might be missing?”

“Some people could be missing packages,” Starh said.

“You don’t have confidence in the post office anymore because people can just break in and steal your mail and you have no idea what’s going on.”

If you notice any suspicious activity near your mailbox, call authorities immediately.
