Medicine Hat’s food waste pilot program first collection next week

The City of Medicine Hat’s food waste pilot program is set to get underway on Monday with the beginning of yard waste collection starting in zone five.

Residents participating in the pilot in all collection zones should receive their buckets for the food waste by the end of the day Friday, April 5.

Only participants in the pilot are asked to dump the approved food waste in their green yard waste bin along with grass clippings, leaves, cut branches and any other approved material.

A full list of approved food waste items can be found on the city website or in the brochure inside the food waste buckets being sent out.

Shane Briggs, the city’s waste and recycling manager, encouraged residents to read the brochure.

“It’s very informative, it has a QR code as well that it’ll take you directly to the website,” Briggs said.

“If you go to the website, we really encourage people, like citywide, not even just the people that are in the pilot program to engage in the survey,” he added.

“We just want people’s feedback, kind of before the pilot and then after.”

The surveys are encouraged for all residents, as the city looks to gather as much data as they can.

The goal of the program is to see if mass adoption is wanted, which would help make the landfill last longer.

Thirty-five per cent of the current waste at the landfill is food waste.

The city’s website has a frequently asked questions section for the food waste pilot program.
