10-year-old girl wins Cypress County t-shirt contest

A 10-year-old girl has won Cypress County’s t-shirt contest with a design that shows off elements of Indigenous heritage, landscapes, wildlife, sun and Cypress Hills.

When Mikayla Irwin first heard about the contest, she picked up her tablet and got to work on her design, according to a county news release.

After her mom submitted the t-shirt design on her behalf, Makayla told classmates, friends and family. Irwin’s supporters rallied to vote for her design and she won with 250 votes.

Mikayla — who received a gift bag for winning — was just one of several great entries, the county said.

The “Southeast Alberta’s Playground” t-shirts will debut in mid-May, when the county’s Welcome Centre in Walsh is slated to open for the season.
