Monsignor McCoy’s senior boys and girls basketball teams ready for joint journey to provincials

At Medicine Hat’s Monsignor McCoy High School, celebration banners were set up and students were wearing red to support their two basketball teams heading to provincials in Strathmore.

For the first time in a while, both the girls and boys are going in the same year.

“We both haven’t won since 2010 our coach told us, so it’s actually really great,” said co-captain of the senior girls Colts Melody Rocheleau.

“It’s great going together, because last year we just went by ourselves. But having a guys team to come and support you, to make you not feel alone and less nervous is actually really exciting this year.”

Rocheleau says that although they are ranked 10th, if they play the way they did at zones, they will find success at provincials.

Their first game is against St. Albert Catholic School at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The boys Colts team kicks off playoffs Thursday at noon against St. Joseph school and they are seeded ninth out of 12 teams.

Grade 12 Colt Ephraim Huber says their plan is to play hard, do their thing, and have a good tourney.

“I think our strengths are definitely our chemistry. We have a lot of diversity too, everyone has their different strengths,” Huber told CHAT News.

“I’d say our only weakness is our size. Every team we play we’re smaller than, but I think what we lack in size, we make up with hard work and defense.”

To win provincials, both teams will have to win four consecutive games.
