Pothole repairs underway in Medicine Hat

Now that warmer weather has arrived, and the snow is all gone, pesky potholes are popping up on city streets across Medicine Hat and area causing damage to cars and trucks.

The most common types of damage include loss of a hubcap, tire damage, a bent or broken wheel or damaged suspension.

The best thing to do is safely manoeuvre around the hole if you can.

If that’s not possible, gently coast over the hole.

Unless you don’t see it, that’s where the problems come in.

Right now in the city, there are a number of potholes that need to be fixed, especially along Dunmore Road.

Happily, crews from the city have started the process of filling them up.

Operations Manager for Municipal Works with the City of Medicine Hat Trevor Funk said that filling up the holes is a number one priority in the spring.

“Starting last week we had upwards of three crews patching with cold mix,” Funk said.

“Today we had an early crew start at 4 a.m. getting some of those ones on the main roads with a lot of traffic during the day, and three pothole crews out during the day,” he added.

“We’re hitting it pretty hard right now we’re being proactive as much as we can.”

Motorists are reminded to give people fixing the potholes space to allow them to work safely and effectively.

Funk adds that they haven’t seen quite as many potholes as in past years.

“Some of the moisture has left us pretty early and we haven’t had a lot of freeze with moisture on the road,” Funk said.

“That’s normally the biggest issue when you get into the freezing at night and the plus temperatures in the daytime, and you get that water seeping into the road.”
