Medicine Hat playing host to major archery tournament this weekend

Archers from far and wide are coming to Medicine Hat on Saturday.

The Medicine Hat Archery Club is playing host to the Archery Schooter Association Tournament this weekend, drawing in archers from across the province, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and even from Montana and Oregon.

Nearly 200 archers have already registered for the tournament, according to organizers.

Former club president Dan David said the sport is experiencing a post-pandemic growth period, as many younger players get into the sport.

“We had a big lull during COVID of course because we couldn’t open our lanes,” David said, explaining that some of the club’s members moved on to new activities during that time.

“We lost a lot of people, but we’re climbing back out now and it’s actually looking really good,’ he added.

“We got a lot of young people into it now, into our youth group, and some great people running it.”

With this tournament being the first time club shoot director Dalton Grover will run it

“It’s exciting, it’s a little bit overwhelming,” Grover said.

“Got a little bit of a reputation to hang on to, but it’ll all come together good.”

The tournament is about more than just the archers, David said.

“We also like to involve the community by asking them for help, inviting them over and pushing people that way, whatever we can possibly do,” David said.
