‘Educate yourself more’: Medicine Hat High School students mark Black History Month with open conversation

Feb 8, 2024 | 5:28 PM

February is Black History Month, a time when people across Canada honour the legacy of Black people and their communities.

The Medicine Hat High School Black Student Alliance (BSA) on Thursday invited Ken Feser of the Medicine Hat Public Library to give a presentation, but also facilitate a conversation.

Feser led the presentation called ‘book talk,’ reviewing books written by black authors. He also spoke about instances where he saw cultural bias while working at the library.

Feser encouraged students to talk about the definition of cultural bias and what it means to them.

This is just one of many events the Black Student Alliance has planned for this month.

Every Thursday they plan a new festivity, including school performances and social events.

Hat High student and BSA member Dami Oluwalana says there are ways for students and adults of all races to get involved in black history month.

“We want to encourage that spirit of reading as well, supporting charity organizations that help African communities or even communities within the town that help support diversity and inclusion,” Oluwalana said.

“Educate yourself more, watch documentaries, make sure that you’re keeping up to date with how you function in society.”

Next Thursday, the Black Student Alliance will be making merch and bracelets to continue the celebration of Black History Month.
