Premier Danielle Smith heading to U.S. capital to promote Alberta’s role in the global energy sector

Premier Danielle Smith will promote Alberta’s role as a key player in the global energy transition in a trip to the U.S. capital this week, a second leg in a round trip after a stop in Ottawa.

Smith will meet with members of Congress, industry leaders and think tanks to highlight Alberta’s energy sector as a dynamic mix of traditional resources and emerging clean energy sources, according to her office.

“Alberta is, and has always been, a friend to the United States,” Smith said in a statement Tuesday ahead of her first-ever trip to Washington, D.C.

“We share a common mission to ensure North American energy security and a reliable energy grid,” she added.

“I am looking forward to sharing how our province strives to be the most credible, responsible supplier of energy in a decarbonizing world, and the successes we have achieved as we grow our economy while reducing emissions.”

Smith, travelling with six staff members, will head to the U.S. on Wednesday and stay until returning to Alberta on Friday.

Smith’s trip to the U.S. comes after spending time in Ottawa. On Monday, she opened an Alberta advocacy office and criticized the federal government’s carbon neutrality policies.
